The first challenge any one attempting to take up the subject of Ahmad Bamba will face is how to decide what to focus on and what to leave out. Unless the purpose is to write a complete encyclopedia, it will be difficult to determine which aspect of the Great Man’s life is more interesting or more important to write about. TOUBA

Cheikh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke, commonly known as “Cheikh Amadou Bamba” (1853-1927), is said to have founded Touba under a large tree when, in a moment of transcendence, he had a cosmic vision of light. In Arabic, it means “bliss” or “beatitude” and evokes the sweet pleasures of eternal life in the afterlife. In Islamic tradition, it is also the name of the Tree of Paradise. In Sufism, this symbolic tree represents an aspiration to spiritual perfection and proximity to God.

Touba was founded in 1887 by Aamadu Bàmba. The holy place remained a small, isolated place in nature until his death and burial on the site of the Great Mosque, 40 years later. The Great Mosque was finally completed in 1963 and since its inauguration the city has grown rapidly: from less than 5,000 inhabitants in 1964, the population was officially estimated at 529,000 in 2007.
